Four modes explained
Sale Price โ original ร (1 โ %/100)
Amount Saved โ original ร %/100
Percent Off โ (original โ sale) รท original ร 100
Original Price โ sale รท (1 โ %/100)
When to use each mode
Use Sale Price for shopping. Use Amount Saved to compare deals. Use Percent Off when a tag shows only the sale price. Use Original Price to reverse-calculate a pre-sale price.
Discount formulas
Example: $120 original, 25% off โ sale price = $120 ร 0.75 = $90, amount saved = $120 ร 0.25 = $30.
How to handle stacked discounts
When a retailer applies two discounts in sequence (e.g., 20% off, then an extra 10% off the discounted price), you cannot simply add them together. A 20% + 10% stack is not 30% off โ it is 28% off.
To calculate stacked discounts, run each step separately using the output of one calculation as the original price for the next.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the sale price after a discount?
Multiply the original price by (1 โ discount percentage รท 100). For a 25% discount on $120: $120 ร (1 โ 0.25) = $120 ร 0.75 = $90. Alternatively: subtract the amount saved from the original price.
How do I find the original price if I only know the sale price and discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 โ discount รท 100). If something costs $90 after a 25% discount: $90 รท 0.75 = $120 original price. This is the "Original Price" mode in this calculator.
How do I calculate percent off from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, then multiply by 100. For $90 sale on a $120 item: ($120 โ $90) รท $120 ร 100 = $30 รท $120 ร 100 = 25% off.
Are stacked discounts the same as adding the percentages?
No. A 20% discount followed by an additional 10% off equals 28% total off โ not 30%. Each successive discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. To calculate, apply each discount step by step.
Does this calculator include tax?
No โ this calculator works on the pre-tax price only. If you need the final cost after tax, add the applicable sales tax percentage to the sale price result. For example, $90 sale price + 8% tax = $90 ร 1.08 = $97.20.
